Why are there maxima at both crest and trough interference in two-slit experiments?

On a two slit experiment,the waves when diffract , on the screen maxima and minima are produced.Since both crest and trough interfere,does that mean the first maxima is produced because of the interference between two crests and the second maxima is produced because of the interference between two troughs?

I believe that is correct...it is the place where a trough and a crest meet that a minima is produced..

It is just that whenever there is constructive interference, maxima is produced. Doesn't matter whether crests or troughs meet. That just depends on the initial conditions. So, it isn't necessary that first maxima is produced by crests etc.
