Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the presence of traffic cones on empty motorways, exploring reasons for their frequent appearance despite a lack of visible activity. Participants raise questions about statistics, legal regulations, and potential explanations for this phenomenon.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about statistics related to traffic cone usage and expresses confusion over their frequent presence without accompanying activity.
  • Another participant suggests that the cones may be related to legal protections for nesting areas, indicating that work is restricted near these sites.
  • A participant presents a humorous formula for calculating traffic cone density, incorporating factors such as traffic volume and driver intelligence, and notes specific high-density areas.
  • A repeated question about the rationale behind the absence of cones on the center carriageway is raised, indicating a perceived inconsistency in cone placement.
  • One participant comments on the seasonal aspect of construction, implying that the cones may be more prevalent during certain times of the year.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express various hypotheses regarding the presence of traffic cones, but no consensus is reached on a definitive explanation. Multiple competing views remain, including legal, statistical, and humorous interpretations.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the reasons for traffic cone placement are not fully explored, and the humorous formula presented lacks empirical backing. The discussion does not resolve the underlying questions about the necessity and logic of cone placement.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in traffic management, road safety regulations, or those curious about the peculiarities of motorway maintenance may find this discussion relevant.

Is there some statistic that gives a ball park figure? And doe's anyone knows why they are even there, time after time i see these cones but no activity.

It's possible you've come upon a breeding colony (They have to come from somewhere!). We have a number of nesting areas here in PA and, apparently by law, no one is permitted to disturb them by working within 2 miles. The sole exception is during rush hour.

The formula for required traffic cone density is given as follows:

F = (n * V^2) / IQ

Where F is the cone density (number required per kilometre), n the number of cars passing per hour, V the intended speed limit (in mph), and IQ the intelligence of the average driver for that area. You'll note a particularly high cone density on the M6 in areas around Cannock, Wolverhampton and Coventry because of the denominator of this equation.

Don't worry, Winter's almost here... construction season is almost over.

Has anyone noticed, they never cone off the center carriageway?
