Why Do Men Retain Childish Traits?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the perception of maturity among men, with participants humorously questioning why some men seem to retain childish behaviors. Many express that growing up is overrated, suggesting that maturity doesn't equate to losing the ability to have fun. The conversation touches on the idea that both men and women can exhibit immaturity, often linked to poor role models during upbringing. Participants share personal anecdotes about enjoying childhood activities like watching cartoons and playing video games, emphasizing that maintaining a sense of playfulness can coexist with adult responsibilities. The notion that being an adult allows for arbitrary authority and the freedom to enjoy life without strict adherence to societal norms is also explored, with a general consensus that a balance between fun and seriousness is essential for a fulfilling life.

Why do men never grow up?
Why do they have a childish manner?

Only some NEVER grow up, just as there are women who never really grow up either (think Paris Hilton).

Being grown up doesn't mean never having fun, it means knowing when it's the right time and place to have fun, and when it's the time and place to be serious. Most adults (men and women) know this. Those that don't have probably had very poor role models growing up and were never taught how to behave, and once they are grown men, it's a bit late to ground them for misbehavior.

I'm not quite sure if she's really a woman, though.

I don't grow up because growing up is overrated. Besides, we all know that grown ups are boring.

I still watch Tom and Jerry. I'm 20.

I remember crying when I was a little kid because the "adults" wanted to watch the news and I wanted to watch Tom and Jerry (only one TV). Many "measures" of growing up are flawed anyways.

I have worked every summer full-time since the age of 13, including after-school work, and worked summers all through college and as much as possible through the intervening 40+ years. I may not have grown up, but I like to think that I have matured with enough child-like qualities to keep me young.

What does mature mean? Is crying for 30 minutes because you have nothing to wear mature? :) (*slightly bitter at the moment*)

Heck...why would I want to grow up??

I am 22, and yea, I watch Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes...brings back good memories! I play video games too...(includes Mario ). Being a kid is fun... and I still don't consider myself old. Maybe, I'll think about it when I'm 60+...

Are you guys nuts? When you grow up, you get to end any argument with "because I am the grown up, and I say so". You get to scold people for "improper" grammar -- and your rules don't even have to make any sense! Other grown-ups will automatically believe you over a non-grown-up, so you can lie all you want, as long as you don't leave other evidence. Even being mature for just 40 minutes 3 to 4 times a week can give you noticeably stronger buttocks within a few short months. I'm sure there are other benefits.

Yeah, but if you can't watch cartoons, then the trade off isn't worth it.

You know, this whole conversation reminds me of something funny. We've got an undergrad working in our research group this summer. The other day in my office, we had to rearrange all the desks because someone's new computer didn't have a long enough extention cord. We found a sort of portable wall (probably a leftover from some cubicle), and decided to put it between my desk and the undergrad's. When our professor walked in and was mildly surprised at the sudden change, one of the other grad students said (in reference to me and the undergrad), "those two were fighting, so I had to separate them."

Now why would I ever want to grow up?

I grow down all the time; what are you talking about? I can grow up, then down when ever I feel like; Just the other day I was working on an assignmentat work and my head was going to explode so I grew down and started playing video games . Eventually I grew back up and started to work on the assignment again.

You know who never grows up? Chips! Thats right. You can leave them in one place and come back in a year and its like the way you left them. But we all have to grow up then down and maby back up or else someone will eat us. Like right now Iam eating chips because I don't want to leave them here all alone and they'll never grow up anyway.

One of the earliest memories of my life is the day of my 4th birthday. My mother baked a pineapple upsidedown cake. She showed it to me with its two caramelized pineapples. Well, to my young eyes they were just burnt. I asked mom "If I don't eat the cake, can I still be 4 years old?". My mother, being a liberal, said yes I didn't have to eat the cake and I would be 4 years old. She was wrong. I am still that 3 year old boy.
