Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the valuation of the question and answer site Quora, which is claimed to be worth over a billion dollars. Participants compare Quora to other online forums, particularly Physics Forums (PF), and explore the reasons behind Quora's perceived value, as well as the presence of PF in relation to platforms like Wikipedia.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Exploratory
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants question why Quora should be valued at over a billion dollars, suggesting it appears similar to other online forums.
  • Others provide website valuation estimates for Quora, indicating a significantly lower value based on web traffic metrics.
  • A participant likens Quora to a "Facebook version of Wikipedia," suggesting that Wikipedia could benefit from a similar funding model.
  • There are repeated inquiries about why PF does not have its own Wikipedia page, with some suggesting that it does have some form of wiki integration.
  • One participant humorously proposes a nomination for a user to create a Wikipedia page for PF, while others engage in light-hearted banter about this idea.
  • A participant shares their personal experience of becoming addicted to Quora, noting a shift away from other platforms, and references concerns about contributor fatigue on Wikipedia.
  • Another participant implies that the audience may not be the right demographic to assess Quora's value compared to PF.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on Quora's valuation and its comparison to PF, with no consensus reached on the merits of Quora's worth or the necessity of a Wikipedia page for PF.

Contextual Notes

Some claims about website valuations are based on specific traffic metrics, which may not account for broader factors influencing site value. The discussion includes speculative and humorous elements that may not reflect serious analysis.

Physics news on Phys.org
Never heard of the site before.

The following sites that do website value calculations based on web traffic.

Code:

[PLAIN]http://www.mywebsiteworth.com/site/www.quora.com[/PLAIN]
http://www.urlappraisal.net/appraisal/quora.com.html

From these three, the approximately value is $2,564,234.67

Who knows.

The question and answer site Quora is being touted as worth over a billion dollars (http://www.businessinsider.com/quora-would-turn-down-a-1-billion-offer-says-investor-2011-2), but it looks to me to be another online forum. Can anyone see why it should have such a ridiculous valuation. Would anyone ask a question on Quora rather than PF?

I agree, its just a Facebook version of Wikipedia as far as I can tell. In fact, Wikipedia should maybe take the hint and try funding itself with a similar social network.

Just for grins I did PhysicsForums.com http://www.mywebsiteworth.com/site/www.physicsforums.com and it claims $129,383

Why doesn't PF have its own wikipedia page, that's the question.

It does sort of?

Sometimes I see keywords in peoples text that link to some sort of wiki.

Heh, I got so addicted to Quora that I practically stopped going everywhere else for 6 months.

It takes some time getting used to though.

http://www.wired.com/magazine/2011/04/ff_quora/ shows its real ambition. Basically, there's a lot of contributor fatigue on Wikipedia (http://gawker.com/5827835/wikipedia-is-slowly-dying) so people get more excited about contributing to Quora
