Homework Help Overview

The problem involves calculating the value of y in the expression 10y = 103.2 × 102.4 × 10-1.8 × 1000.3 × 100-0.5, which is situated within the context of logarithmic and exponential expressions.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Mathematical reasoning, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants discuss the potential use of logarithms to simplify the calculation, while others suggest rewriting components of the expression in exponential form to facilitate simplification without logs.

Discussion Status

The discussion is ongoing, with some participants providing alternative approaches to simplify the expression. There is an indication of differing opinions on the necessity of logarithms, and some participants express confusion about the next steps in finding y.

Contextual Notes

There is a lack of examples provided in the original question, which may contribute to participants' uncertainty about how to proceed. The use of logarithms is not explicitly mentioned in the problem statement, leading to varied interpretations of the best approach.

Homework Statement

Calculate the value of y in the expression below:

10y = 103.2 × 102.4 × 10-1.8 × 1000.3 × 100-0.5

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

10y= 103.8*100-0.2

Don't know how to move on from here as have no other examples like it? I am thinking I can use logs, however it is not mentioned in the question.

Write ##100## as ##10^2## to simplify. No need for logs.

If you want to use logs, take the base-10 log of each side.

10y= 103.8*100-0.2

10y=103.8*(102)-0.2

10y=103.4

Now how do I find y? Thanks.

You cannot possibly be serious. Just look at the equation!

got it!
