A double acting pump moves fluid when the piston is moving in either direction.

A system of check valves opens and closes to allow one side to draw in fluid while the other side is pressing it outward, then as the piston changes direction the opposite side draws in fluid and the other side presses it outward. This makes for a fairly steady movement of fluid.

A single acting would be similar to an average hand operated tire pump. When you press down it blows into the tire when you draw back it fills with air. A double acting pump would blow into the tire when the pump is pressed down AND drawn back.

Not sure what spooling is.
