Question about conservation of angular momentum

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the conservation of angular momentum, specifically regarding a 1 kg mass attached to a weightless cable rotating around an axis. When the radius is increased from 1 meter to 100 meters while maintaining angular momentum, the angular speed decreases from 100 rad/s to 1 rad/s. This demonstrates that angular momentum is conserved, leading to the conclusion that an increase in radius results in a proportional decrease in angular speed, confirming the relationship between angular momentum and linear velocity.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of angular momentum and its conservation principles
  • Familiarity with the formula for angular momentum (L = mvr)
  • Basic knowledge of rotational dynamics
  • Ability to manipulate equations involving angular speed and radius
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the formula for angular momentum in detail (L = mvr)
  • Learn about the implications of conservation laws in physics
  • Explore examples of angular momentum in various physical systems
  • Investigate the relationship between linear and angular velocity in circular motion
USEFUL FOR

Physics students, educators, and anyone interested in understanding the principles of rotational motion and angular momentum conservation.

i have 1 kg mass tight to a weightless cable tigh to an axe with a radius of 1m and it goes at an angular speed of 100 rad/s, what will be the angular speed if i increase the radius to 100 m according conservation of angular momentum?

if the answer is 1 rad/s (100 times more radius 100 times less angular speed) this would mean that conservation of angular momentum is conservation of linear velocity, is this correct?

what formula would you use to solve this problem?

Hint: The angular momentum of a particle going in a circle is its momentum (mv) times the radius of the circle. Express that in terms of angular speed.
