The discussion centers around the use of video cards with TV output capabilities in building a new computer. Participants share their experiences and opinions regarding the quality of video output on standard TVs compared to computer monitors, particularly in the context of watching DVDs, downloaded videos, and gaming.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants inquire about the quality of video output from video cards with TV out features, specifically regarding how it looks on standard TVs.
  • One participant shares a positive experience using a laptop with TV out for watching DVDs, noting that the quality is great.
  • Another participant cautions that while DVDs and downloaded videos look good, text may be difficult to read on standard TVs due to lower pixel density, suggesting that only HDTVs might handle text better.
  • A different participant mentions that while using TV output on their graphics card results in a fuzzy desktop display, DVDs and games still look quite good.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the quality of text display versus video content on standard TVs, indicating a lack of consensus on the overall effectiveness of TV output for various uses.

Contextual Notes

I have a laptop with TV out that I use to watch dvd's on a tv. It looks great. Many video cards (or separate add-in cards) also have tv tuners for watching and recording tv on your computer. Also a nice feature.

yes for dvds and downloaded videos there grovy but don't expect to be able to read text off ur tv

unless u have a hdtv, id suspect thos are capable of displaying text. but most tvs cant, they don't have enuf pixels like computer screens

ok, i have tv output on my graphics card and i have hooked it up to my tv quite a bit. using it on your desktop on your comp it looks very fuzzy like because of the resolution but like said dvd's look great. games also look quite good.
