Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the possibility of resurfacing a laptop's LCD screen, specifically addressing the replacement of the plastic cover without needing to replace the entire screen. Participants explore options for repair services and the implications of screen visibility issues.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Debate/contested, Experimental/applied

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about replacing the plastic cover of a laptop screen without replacing the entire screen due to a scratch.
  • Another participant suggests that the plastic cover is meant to protect the glass cover of the LCD and recommends contacting the laptop's service department for a quote.
  • A later reply indicates that the manufacturer does not offer the service and advises looking for third-party options.
  • One participant mentions a specific company, ScreenTek, that can perform the service but notes the need for the screen to be in stock for the repolarization process, highlighting potential complications if the initial attempt fails.
  • Another participant raises a concern about visibility issues related to the backlight, suggesting that if the screen appears dark, it may necessitate replacing the entire LCD screen section depending on the manufacturer.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the feasibility of replacing just the plastic cover versus the entire screen, and there is no consensus on the best course of action for repair.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the dependency on specific manufacturer policies and the availability of parts from third-party services, as well as unresolved details regarding the repolarization process.

I have a small scratch on my screen, at the plastic cover level. Is it possible to have the plastic cover replaced without replacing the entire screen?

I would think so. The LCD itself will have a glass cover, and the plastic over-cover would be there to protect the glass. Where did you buy the laptop? You should be able to give their service department a call for a quote.

I called them and they told me they don't offer this service and advised me to look for a third party service. I'll see what I can find.

Werg,

A company called ScreenTek (http://www.screentekinc.com) can do this for you. The only thing is, they have to have your screen in stock to complete the repolarization of the screen. This is due to the fact that the repolarization process can be difficult and if the first try doesn't work out, they have to have a back up screen for you.

Good luck.

What Kevin said as well. If the screen is still visibile, but it's darker than hell, it's the backlight. Depending on the manufacturer, it may require the entire LCD screen section to be replaced.
