How Can We Improve Odometer Accuracy for Precision Testing in Civil Engineering?
Thanks for the suggestions. We close for Christmas today so will come back to this in the new year. Jobrag, this has a practical application while testing pavements. We have a proprietary test similar to Benkelman Beam test and we're just working on it.- AshNZ

How Can We Improve Odometer Accuracy for Precision Testing in Civil Engineering?
Thanks for your replies. Seems like I wasn't 100% clear. What we basically want the truck driver to do is sit in a parked truck, roll the truck forward slowly and stop when he's driven 2.7m. This probably rules the laser distance meters out. The truck isn't an 18 wheeler. It's just medium sized...- AshNZ

How Can We Improve Odometer Accuracy for Precision Testing in Civil Engineering?
Sorry should have mentioned it before, we're looking at that accuracy over very small distances (2-3m) and at a very slow speed. We need to be able to measure 2.7m +- .1 m.- AshNZ

How Can We Improve Odometer Accuracy for Precision Testing in Civil Engineering?
Hi, I'm a civil engineering student in a summer internship at the moment but I've come across a mechanical issue. We want to buy or build a very accurate (+- 100mm) odometer for a large truck. We have a Survmaster precision odometer in there but it's only accurate to +- 1.0m which isn't good...- AshNZ

Unfair Education System: Exam Results Don't Reflect Efforts
Few things: - 200 pages in 2 days is not hard especially during the study week. Think about it - I spent 6-7 hours each day and that's about 15 pages/hour. Not uncommon at all during study week and it is not cramming. And I agree with Moonbear that highlighting is passive - that's why I took...- AshNZ

Unfair Education System: Exam Results Don't Reflect Efforts
I'm satisfied the way I revised to be honest. If I had to sit this exam all over again, not knowing what is going to come in the exam, I will revise the way I did this time. However I do not think it was not fair for the lecturer (or whoever set the paper) to give us a paper like this. He was...- AshNZ

Unfair Education System: Exam Results Don't Reflect Efforts
This is so unfair! I had my PH Waste (civil engineering) exam yesterday. I was really worried about this subject so I started my revision early. I spent most time on this before the exams (got 90% in one assignment I worked hard on) Then I spent two days in the study week and went through a 200...- AshNZ

Velocity and Friction Question
Homework Statement An object takes 18m to stop due to friction. Assume no skidding. If the coefficient of static friction is 0.35, what is the initial velocity of the object? The Attempt at a Solution I have looked at the Normal vs Frictional force equation and I have looked at the three...- AshNZ

Solving Fluid Mechanics Question: Radial Gate Forces and Direction
Yes, you break it down to horz and vertical. Then find horizontal by rho*g*h*A(projected area). Then you find vertical using )(pi*r^2L)/4)*rho*g. Then use trig to find resultant and the angle.- AshNZ

Solving Fluid Mechanics Question: Radial Gate Forces and Direction
I've cracked this question. There was a similar question in past years exam papers and luckily I had the solution for that paper.- AshNZ

Solving Fluid Mechanics Question: Radial Gate Forces and Direction
Hey guys, I'm new here. I've been following PF on and off to get some hints in past but this is the first time I'm posting. I'm doing civil engineering second year and the following is an assignment question (there are total of four questions and I'm stuck on all four :( ). I'm not looking for...- AshNZ
