Maximizing Possibilities: Solving Four-Letter Word Order Question
Question: How many four letter words can be made in increasing order. For instance, "aade" is a possibility, but "adae" is not. Solution: I honestly don't understand how I can solve this, I tried making a formula but it doesn't seem to work. The formula I came up with is: 1 + (3 x (25-n))...- danizh

Pine costs twice as much as fibreboard
It isn't specified, that is what's causing the confusion. In a situation like this, would you consider "width x height" the back (the shorter length multiplied by height)?- danizh

Pine costs twice as much as fibreboard
I've been stuck on this question for more than an hour and I still can't seem to get the right answer (:mad:). So here goes: Question:Sindy is building a rectangular wooden btoy chest so that its length is two times its width. She has picked pine for the top, front, and two sides of the...- danizh

Solving Cylinder Volume from Rectangle Perimeter of 40cm
Ah, I understand it now! Thanks for clearing that up. I think the key to the question is that it is rotated to create a right cylinder.- danizh

Solving Cylinder Volume from Rectangle Perimeter of 40cm
I have another question, wouldn't it be more appropriate if the "restraint equation" was 40 = 2h + 4r rather than 40 = 2h + 2r. It just seems to make more sense since if the cylinder is transformed into a rectangle, each side of the triangle would be a diameter (or two times the radius) rather...- danizh

Solving Cylinder Volume from Rectangle Perimeter of 40cm
Question: A rectangle with a perimeter of 40cm is rotated around one of its sides, creating a right cylinder. What is the largest possible volume for this cylinder? Here's what I have done so far: Equation #1: 40 = 2h + 2r r = 20 - h Equation #2: Volume = pi*r^2h = pi(20-h)(h) = 20pi*h...- danizh

Two Calculus Problem Solving Questions.
#1: The tangent at a point P on the curve y = x^3 intersects the curve again at a point Q. Show that the slope of the tangent at Q is four times the slope of the tangent at P. So far, I found the derivative of y = x^3, which is y' = 3x^2. Now I set these two equal to each other: X^3 = 3x^2...- danizh

Calculus Problem Solving Question
Please help me solve this problem. Find numbers a, b, and c so that the graph of f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c has x-intercepts at (0,0) and (8,0) and a tangent with slope 16 where x = 2. I have done this so far: f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c f '(x) = (2)(a)(x) + b 16 = (2)(a)(2) + b 16 = 4a + b I...- danizh

But (-1)^2 - 1 = 0 as well. So there are no solutions for "+/- 1," I suppose. Please correct me if I am wrong.- danizh
