Can I use root-sum-square for this sort of problem?
Homework Statement This isn't actually a problem I came across in a textbook, but close enough. Let's say I have a rod made of n sections. Each section has a 3-simga manufacturing uncertainty of +/- some value normally distributed about the mean. What is the uncertainty of the final length of...- ehilge

High School Question on Comet 67P tail in Rosetta image
I cam across this picture from the Rosetta mission the other day. You'll notice the sun is illuminating the right hand side of the comet. Additional the tail is coming off the right hand side. This goes against what I've been taught about comets in that the solar wind pushes the tail the...- ehilge

Schools 'red flags' in searching for graduate schools
hmmmm... I see what you mean, my bad. In my defense, after you create an account and start the application, it doesn't direct you to submit a transcript. Also, i found that in reference to my point on the application deadline, it does say that to be considered for funding, it is strongly...- ehilge

Schools 'red flags' in searching for graduate schools
Hey all, I'm in the final stages of making a decision on where I will apply for grad school in aerospace engineering. I was looking pretty strongly at the University of Alabama Huntsville. They seem to do some pretty good research in the area I'm interested in, and I'm sure they have some...- ehilge

Electromechanical vs. Mechanical Engineering
Hey everyone, so I know aerospace vs mechanical has been discussed to death, but I want your opinion anyway. I'm currently finishing up an ME undergrad degree and am exploring my options for grad school. I have some experience in combustion research and find it worthwhile enough. My interests...- ehilge

Fireproof Fabrics for Handheld Device - Lightweight Materials
I suppose I just should have explained this to begin with. The project relates to propane weed flaming. See http://cropwatch.unl.edu/web/cropwatch/archive?articleID=4963643 for some background info. We are trying to take the shrink tractor mounted rigs you see in the pictures down to a single...- ehilge

Fireproof Fabrics for Handheld Device - Lightweight Materials
Any suggestions as to what might be a good ceramic that's not too brittle and reasonably easy to machine? The application of this thing is actually in a agriculture believe it or not, so there's a decent chance it'll get used and abused so I'd like to avoid fragility if possible.- ehilge

Fireproof Fabrics for Handheld Device - Lightweight Materials
A big metal plate would be nice, but this is going to be a portable application, so weight is a consideration. I was hoping to find something a bit lighter than a thick metal plate.- ehilge

Fireproof Fabrics for Handheld Device - Lightweight Materials
Without going into to many details, I'm in need of a lightweight material that can act as a flame shield. Said material needs to be lightweight because the application is for a handheld device. I'm looking at a couple square feet of material. It will need to withstand a direct propane flame (my...- ehilge

Schools Grad schools associated with national labs
Hmmm, I see what you're saying. I feel like I need to start deciding on some schools to research before I start looking for advisors though. How would I go about finding an advisor with connections to a particular lab? I'll be doing some asking around after I get back to school, but I'd like to...- ehilge

Schools Grad schools associated with national labs
Hey all, I'm starting my search for mechanical engineering grad schools and I could use a few suggestions. Just, so you know a bit about me, my current niche is in energy and I have experience in combustion research, but I've also always been interested in space-related work. Maybe I could even...- ehilge

Questions about super critical boilers
Another question I thought of. I've read that the water in a supercritical system needs to be more pure than that of a subcritical system, why is that?- ehilge

Questions about super critical boilers
I have a couple questions on supercritical boiler systems with reference to pulverized coal power plants. My first question concerns what exactly a supercritical fluid is. I realize that the phrase 'supercritical' means above the critical point where there is no clear distinction between...- ehilge

Decoding material specifications
Thanks for the information. Is there anything akin to standard rules for the numbering systems? Or are the numbers purely arbitrary? For example, if an ASTM number is in the 400 range, does that in itself give you any particular information on the item in questions?- ehilge
