1)What exactly is meant by the 'static limit' where the frequency is taken to zero, but the wavenumber is finite? I am getting confused because if the frequency is zero, then surely the probing electrons/photons/whatever have no wavelength, so how can the wavenumber be finite and non-zero?

I live in the UK and I am hoping to start a PhD next October, so currently I am emailing potential supervisors about projects which I usually start off with a cover letter and a CV, however I don't seem to be getting any replies back! This includes some professors who I have emailed before...
I am currently looking at what research groups to apply to for starting a PhD next year, is there anywhere particularly good that I am missing out? I did my Masters in Theoretical Physics but I am actually leaning more towards a mixture of both experimental and theory at this stage, I did do...
So I am wanting to start applying for PhDs for entry in Sept/Oct 2012, I graduated from Uni last year so I don't really have any guidance on this! I do have a good idea of what I want to apply to do, and have a list of places I would like to apply (saving this for another thread haha :) )...
Thanks for the replies everyone, I have been considering studying for a PhD in Nanoscience/Graphene/Condensed Matter also and I think I am certainly leaning more that way now after a bit more thought.
I think cosmology is the area I'd be most interested in, what would be the best way to find...
Not sure if it was a mistype, but the term with cosh^2 should have an h in the denominator.
Now try to see if there is anything you can take out of the brackets to make C_p in front of them.
Hi everyone,
I am thinking of applying for a PhD in Astrophysics to start in October 2012, at the moment I'm still researching different Unis both here and abroad but in doing my research I've seen that for your long term career prospects it doesn't matter so much what Uni you go to, but more...
I'm reading the paper by D.B. Chklovskii where he quantitatively describes the appearance of strips of incompressible electron fluid in a 2DEG when a magnetic field is applied to it. What I don't get is the relationship between these strips of incompressibility and the edge states in the 2DEG...
Hi, my question is what mapping to use for the problem in the picture attached.
I need to be able to find the potential distribution etc by mapping from the x-y plane (as pictured) to a straight lines plane capacitor, which would be pretty straightforward, but I can't find this map in any...
I can't work out how to calculate the Taylor series for
\frac{1}{|R-r|}
when R>>r, but they are both vectors. We were told to expand in r/R but I did the step below and I'm not sure where to go from there
I got to
\frac{1}{R \sqrt{1 - (2R.r)/R^2 + (r^2)/(R^2)}}
I also know the result...
