Books on Quantum Technology/ Applied QM
Thank you for the recommendation. Does this book include topics like quantum dots, nanotechnology, and quantum optics? (I couldn't tell from the contents page)- lizzie96

Books on Quantum Technology/ Applied QM
Could anyone recommend an up-to-date and not too advanced book or online notes on applied quantum mechanics or quantum technology? Most of my books are quite old and I need to have a basic understanding of the subject for a work experience project in six weeks time. Thank you!- lizzie96

Useful maths & physics books to read before starting university?
Thank you for all the suggestions. I have already read the Feynman Lectures (and agree that they are fantastic!) but I will definitely (try to..) read Visual Complex analysis, Spivak's calculus, and Kleppner & Kolenkow. Hopefully these books will fill some of the major gaps in my knowledge by...- lizzie96

Useful maths & physics books to read before starting university?
Sorry if this question has been asked a lot before, but... What books would be particularly useful to read before starting university? What books explain tricky undergraduate-level topics really well? My course will hopefully be Mathematical Physics, so any recommendations of maths...- lizzie96

Graduate How does General Relativity contradict quantum mechanics?
How does General Relativity "contradict" quantum mechanics? I couldn't work out exactly where to post this. I've heard several times that QM and General relativity "contradict" each other and in certain extreme conditions this becomes a problem. Is this right? I've only heard this in very vague...- lizzie96

Graduate How can majorana neutrinos still be CP violating?
Thank you, that makes much more sense now! I was thinking about it in the way that ofirg said, without really understanding the reasoning/maths. The paper explains it all very well.- lizzie96

Theory project for an inexperienced student- ideas?
I don't want to pick a project yet, I'm just trying to work out if there is an topic of physics in which a theory-type project might be possible on some level. There are a few people I might contact, but I didn't want to ask if I could do a project that would turn out to be way beyond my...- lizzie96

Theory project for an inexperienced student- ideas?
Yes, I can do a little programming (C++/ROOT), which I learned last year for a data-analysis project, and I'm also going to practice coding over the next few months. I agree that understanding experiment construction is important (it's what I mainly did last year) but as I hope to study...- lizzie96

Theory project for an inexperienced student- ideas?
(sorry if this is in the wrong section) Hello, I am in my final year of school (UK) and will be starting university in September. Over the summer I am looking to do an internship/project at my local university for fun. I have a particular interest in the theoretical side of physics, though my...- lizzie96

Graduate How can majorana neutrinos still be CP violating?
This question is probably very over-simplistic, however: if neutrinos are majorana particles, which are their own antiparticles, how could they still be CP violating? I don't understand precisely how this would work, but physicists I have spoken to said that neutrinos being majorana could...- lizzie96

Undergrad Contour integration and Calc. of complex functions
Thank you. I have had a look at some methods online, but I would like to learn in a little more detail. I have also looked at some lecture notes on the topic, but as I mainly want to learn about it in order to understand physics, it is hard to see which parts are the most relevant. Do you know... -

Undergrad Contour integration and Calc. of complex functions
Hello, I would like to learn some contour integration and complex analysis at the simplest level possible. My maths education only goes up to A Level, so I haven't covered any "calculus of complex functions" yet, and with the books I'm trying to read at the moment I keep getting stuck because... -

Internships for 1st-year students (UK)
Does anyone know of any UK or Europe based internships, work experiences or research opportunities for first-year students? I am wondering if it will be possible to do something like this over my university holidays to improve my experience, but everything I have seen so far is only for 3rd and...- lizzie96

Graduate Diagram of relative strengths of fundamental forces
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post- sorry if it's not. ********* Does anyone have an image or link to a website that shows the relative strengths of the strong, weak and electromagnetic forces as a function of energy? I like it as a way to explain spontaneous symmetry breaking...- lizzie96

How accessible is the Peskin and Schroeder textbook?
Thank you for the recommendations- I'll look at those instead of Peskin and Schroeder. Yes, I meant QFT rather than quantum mechanics. I've read Griffith's textbook and a couple of other ones at a similar level, and I'm currently about 2/3 through Schutz's GR textbook, so I also have (very...- lizzie96
