Math Analysis Course: Is it Helpful for Chem/Phys Undergrads?
Would this "introduction to mathematical analysis" course include any topics relevant to real/complex analysis? Or would it be mostly of value to mathematicians and certain kinds of physicists (i.e., a bit too esoteric for chemistry)? Like I said, I'm not sure my school offers complex or real...- MAins

Math Analysis Course: Is it Helpful for Chem/Phys Undergrads?
Thanks. I was told some courses in Real Analysis and Complex Analysis might be helpful. I'm not sure my school offers that; so would these topics not be covered at all in this mathematical analysis class? Any suggestions as to what I should take otherwise? Also, in a somewhat related vein, I...- MAins

Math Analysis Course: Is it Helpful for Chem/Phys Undergrads?
Hi, I am a Chem/Physics undergrad and was wondering if a math course called "intro to analysis" would be helpful for me to take. The course's topics are: "Topology of Euclidean space; continuity; differentiation of real and vector-valued functions; Riemann-Stieltjes integration." Are those...- MAins

Courses Math courses for Chemical Physics?
Other than four semesters of calc., are there any other math courses to take as an undergrad to be well prepared for a PhD program in Chemical Physics? If so, what? Thanks.- MAins

Physics Program Admissions: Chemistry GRE vs Physics Test
Hi, does anybody know if Physics programs will accept the Chemistry GRE in lieu of the Physics test? Also, can somebody with a good chemistry and math background, but not a ton of physics (i.e., not as much as a physics major), get into a good physics program? I'm fairly early on as an...- MAins

Basic differential equations, homogeneous method
xy'-y =sqrt((x^2)+y(^2)) so by method of homogeneous equations I get arcsinh(y/x) = ln|x|+c but don't know what to do from there. the book suggests using sinhx = 1/2 (e^x - e^-x) but I don't know how to incorporate this. The answer should be y= (1/2) * (cx^2 - 1/c). How do you get this? This is...- MAins

Angular momentum of merry go round
This question was asked a while ago by another user, but I do not understand how he got the answer: "A runner of mass m=36 kg and running at 2.9 m/s runs and jumps on the rim of a playground merry-go-round which has a Moment Of Inertia of 404 kgm^2 and a radius of 2 m. Assuming the...- MAins

Angular momentum of merry go round turntable
Hi, I got this question wrong on a test and am really quite lost about it. I'd appreciate somebody running me through it. --- "Suppose a 55 kg person stands at the edge of a 6.5 m diameter merry go round turntable that is mounted on a frictionless bearing and has a moment of inertia of...- MAins

Maple 3D Graph of f(x,y) for -3≤x,y≤3
> f:=(x,y)->(x+3*y -1)*e^(-(x^2)-(y^2)); > plot3d(f(x,y),x=-3..3,y=-3..3); I'm supposed to plot for -3 less than or equal to x,y less than or equal to 3... Does that mean x=y at a given point? Anyway, I rewrote it as above and Maple does not show an error but rather shows just a blank space...- MAins

Maple Plotting a Surface with Maple: Limiting x & y
How do I use maple to plot a corresponding surface? I have f(x,y)=(2x+y etc. I need to plot for x greater than or equal to 5, y less than or equal to 2. I'm guessing I probably need to do plot3d, but how do I write the limits of x and y? when I write x=5..infinity it doesn't work. Any...- MAins

How can you calculate nonequilibrium torque and its effects on an extended body?
Can somebody give an example of nonequilibrium torque and how to go about doing calculations for it? So, for example, for an EQUILIBRIUM problem if you have an aircraft moving with constant velocity there's a drag force in one horizontal direction and a tension opposing it 2 m below the center...- MAins

Triple integration w/spherical coordinates
[b]1. "Find the mass of part of the solid sphere x^2 + y^2 + z^ 2 ≤ 25 in the 1st octant x ≥ 0, y ≥ 0, z ≥ 0 where mass density is f (x, y, z ) = (x^2 + y^2 + z^2 )^3/2 ." [b]3. These problems are really stumping me! I need somebody to work it out/explain it to me! What will the limits...- MAins

Effect of Liquid Level on Standing Wave Frequency in a Soda Bottle
A partially empty soda bottle will produce standing waves in the air above the liquid if you blow across the neck of the bottle. There will be a displacement antinode at the neck and a node at the surface of the soda. What happens if you drink more soda and repeat the experiment? a) no change...- MAins
