Please critic my proof (Limit converges to e)

    Homework Statement Prove that 1 + 1 + 1/2! + 1/3! +1/4! + 1/5!... + 1/n! Limit of this as n goes to infinity is equal to e. Homework Equations I already showed (1 + 1/n)^n = e The Attempt at a Solution My proof is as follows: e = limit (n to infinity) Sum (k=1 to n) of...

    Proving an inequality, Real Analysis

    If anyone cares I ended up doing this by induction. n=2 trivial to check A_n = Sum (from i=1 to n): 1/sqrt(i) A_(n+1) = A_n + 1/sqrt(n+1) Must show: A_(n+1) > sqrt(n+1) = sqrt(n) + sqrt(n+1) - sqrt(n) by our induction hypothesis this is if and only if: 1/sqrt(n+1) > sqrt(n+1) -...

Undergrad What Does a Lim with an Underline or Overline Mean?

My professor started using a Lim with and underline or overline on it. I was wondering what this means? My first guess is Lim Inf and Lim Sup respectively but I would like some confirmation.

Anyone have a hint to even start he problem? I'm a bit stumped.

I'm sorry it should be a sum, I'll edit the original post.

    Proving an inequality, Real Analysis

Homework Equations Prove the following for n > 1, n is a natural number. Sum (from i=1 to n) of: 1/sqrt(i) is > then sqrt(n) The Attempt at a Solution To be honest I have spent 2+ hours on this with little results. I have tried induction on n, I tried showing one increases more every step...

    Simplification of Log/Exponent Expression

    Homework Statement Simplify the following: [log_3(2^x) * 3^(2x)]/e^(2lnx) The Attempt at a Solution e^(2lnx) = x^2 Log_3(2^x) = xlog_3(2) Thus: = 3^(2x)*x*log_3(2) / x^2 = [3^(2x)/x] * log_3(2) Am I missing anything here? I don't seem to find anyway to continue...

HS students: what's a 'C' on your grade scale?

    US, California (% to grade) - Public School in LA 93-100 = A (4.0) 90-93 = A- (3.7) 87-90 = B+ (3.3) 83-87 = B (3.0) 80-83 = B- (2.7) 77-80 = C+ (2.3) 73-77 = C (2.0) 70-73 = C- (1.7) 60-70 = D (1.0) <60 = F (0) Then each teacher had their own ability to shift the grades as they...

Become a U.S. Patent Clerk: Engineering Physics Degree & Pay

I was under the assumption patent clerks are all law majors/lawers with experience in specific fields. My friend worked at a patent firm that usually did work for Cisco Systems and he said everyone there was a science major turning to law.

SUNY Albany PhD in Nanoscience: Do I Have a Chance?

Note: Just because the deadline for the application is April doesn't mean you can't sign up for a new GRE and have it sent in after the fact and put pending for your scores along with your previous one. Just an Idea.

Do you get only one shot at the GRE?

General you can take as much as you want, the Subject test I believe you can take up to 5 times in X (5 or 10?) years. The general in so far as I know is held whenever you want and the Subject is held 3 times a year.

GRE Scores & Physics Major: Suggested PhD Schools

Most schools do not weight the general GRE all that much, though anything below a 700 on the Quantitative is proabably not a good sign. A much better indicator on where you would be a competitive application is your PGRE.
