Rewrite Lagrangian's equation of motion as a 1st order difeq

Sorry, here's some clarification: Basically, it's a hoop that's allowed to move in a larger fixed hoop without slipping. k is the radius between the center of the free hoop and the bigger hoop that it's in. It does not vary with time. If the EOM is 0=gsinθ, isn't that just trivial?

Rewrite Lagrangian's equation of motion as a 1st order difeq

I'm most of the way through this problem. I've already found the lagrangian equations of motion as a second order differential equation. I'm just stuck at the end... Homework Statement Derive a first order differential equation for the motion of a hoop in a bigger hoop. Homework Equations...

Graduate What Happens When You Multiply a Vector by Its Gradient Squared?

No, this isn't for homework. I'm trying to brush up on gradients for the Physics GRE. Let's say I have vector V. What is V(gradient squared)V ? In english, if I multiply the vector to the gradient squared of the same vector, what is that? I'm thinking that it'd just be the gradient...

Graduate Is it Possible to Find the Domain of a Discretized Function for Minimization?

It's continuous everywhere except for it's limited domain. There are no jumps or steps. I thought that a function was considered to be discontinuous if it abruptly cut off. It doesn't asymptote or converge; it just cuts off. Am I wrong to say that it's discontinuous? And you're right...

Graduate Is it Possible to Find the Domain of a Discretized Function for Minimization?

Ok, I'm sorry. I guess I wasn't clear or my understanding of the terminology is wrong. I don't know what the domain of the function is, but it usually ranges from −1 to 4. Sometimes it's 0 to 6. Other times, it seems to be 0 to 4.2763649... I don't know what its boundaries are. These are...

Graduate Is it Possible to Find the Domain of a Discretized Function for Minimization?

A domain of five. 5.0. The function usually exists from −1 to 4.

Graduate Is it Possible to Find the Domain of a Discretized Function for Minimization?

It's about 5 wide. Edit: I'd like to know the boundary within a reasonable accuracy. About 0.00001 or better.

Mathematica Mathematica: minimize black box function

I have a user-defined function that doesn't seem to work with NMinimum, FindMinimum, or any of the other optimization commands. I think this is due to the fact that the function uses elliptic integrals and matricies to obtain an output. It has multiple variables, but I want to keep them all...

Graduate Is it Possible to Find the Domain of a Discretized Function for Minimization?

Hello! I'm not quite sure where to put this. I'm programming, but my question should be strictly mathematical. However, just for your information, I'm programming with Mathematica. I have a function that will give me points. If I give it inputs, I can get a value out of it. I can take a...

Mathematica Mathematica: Function output to array

Hello everybody! I've got a Mathematica problem that I've been working on for a while but can't seem to solve. My code is pretty involved, so I'll simplify the dilemma for you. F1 := Function[{x,m,b}, y = m*x+b; Print[y] ] I have a function called F1. If I call it like...

How Do You Calculate the Change in Velocity for a Van Turning a Corner?

Let's start off in polar coordinates assuming that north is in the direction of the positive y-axis and call the first velocity/angle V1 and the second V2. (in polar coordinates, an ordered pair is (r,theta) where r is the magnitude and theta is the angle) V1 = (28, 90) V2 = (25, 50) Now...

    Relativistic particle in magnetic field

    I've been thinking. Does this make sense? |q|vB = mv2/r |q|vB = pv/r ...because mv = p |q|vB = (ymc2)v/r ...p = ymc2 (y = gamma) r = ymc2/(|q|B) Would that work? Does that make sense?

    Relativistic particle in magnetic field

Homework Statement This is just a short response problem on my homework. It asks: "If a particle is moving at a relativistic velocity, is the following equation still valid? |q|vB = mv2/r If the particle is an electron, what is the value of the mass?" (electron mass = 9.1094x10-31)...

Graduate Can Protons Be Produced in Electron-Positron Annihilation?

I'm trying to understand electron-positron collisions and I've got a few questions if you don't mind :) I know hadrons can be created through electron-positron annihilation. Can protons be produced like this? Has it been done before? How much energy would be required? How do you figure...
