This is a single consolidated thread to give our proud congratulations to people who visit this subforum whenever we hear of them giving a conference talk, or getting a paper through peer-review and accepted for publication, or even just posting research papers on arxiv prior to professional review (because that is a step along the way.)

The idea of a consolidated thread is it takes up less room.

The occasion for such a thread is that quite a few of those visiting the subforum recently HAVE been publishing their articles in professional journals, or posting on arxiv, or taking part in conferences. This is great to see!

Belated congrats to F-H for joining Rovelli group at Marseille. It is a good place to be.

Cumulative congrats to ARIVERO for a series of papers on arxiv.
http://arxiv.org/find/grp_physics/1/au:+rivero_A/0/1/0/all/0/1
Please keep us informed of ones that get published.

Congratulations to Christine Dantas on the acceptance of her paper for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society http://www.arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0604544

Congratulations to Garrett for his papers on arxiv. Most recently:
http://www.arxiv.org/abs/gr-qc/0511120

Congratulations to HOSSI who always hits home-runs. She has published a whole bunch in places like Phys. Letters B, JHEP, CQG. Details here:
http://arxiv.org/find/grp_physics/1/au:+Hossenfelder/0/1/0/all/0/
Oh, and for the recent appointment at Perimeter!

Congrats to Jim Graber on http://www.arxiv.org/abs/gr-qc/0604080 submitted to CQG
Best of luck on the peer-review process to Jim.

I've left some significant accomplishments out---Francesca survived some tough exams for her PhD, Kea has co-authored some extremely interesting papers (in her capacity as real-life person, not as Kea which is a form of unpredictable wild New Zealand parrot) but I can't be exhaustively inclusive in one post.

Tell me anything I've left out.

Y'all keep the professional good news coming! Don't let this thread dry up.

B.

thanks, you are very kind. I intend to reserve congratulatory notices for when people we know here do professional career stuff like publish in peer review, or steps along the way to that.

I am impressed by the group.

Of course anyone can use the thread as a joke too:smile: if they like to do that.

Let me to revive this thread (which was created, partly, to announce preprints of the PF people): http://arxiv.org/abs/hep-ph/0606171 is a collection of three small noted I did trying to propagandize one of the ideas/estimates of Hans. It condenses some of our discussions in the adyacent subforum. It does not present a concrete model, so probably it does not qualify for publication, but just a a note to keep in mind.

every component of the "system"---Hans, you, PF, and hep-ph---worked in exemplary fashion, didn't it? hep-ph is a good place to be, for the information that you two discovered.

Whoa! I see that physicsforums has been cited (on hep-ph no less) as a reference:
"...
[8] de Vries H 2004 Online https://www.physicsforums.com/showpost.php?p=382642&postcount=44

[9] Particle Data Group 2006 Review of Particle Properties 2006, to be published..."

so Physicsforums and the Particle Data Group are cited almost in the same breath

Good show Arivero and Hans!

I have to make this side comment.
this research chain was begun with the witty/adroit use of a PF Poll (!)

https://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=46055

on 4 October 2004

(I myself had the honor of being the second poster on that Poll thread.)

I was glad to go back there momentarily and recall the circumstances. Good luck to any such future developments.

this is what this thread is for, right?

HEY GARRETT!

http://www.fqxi.org/awardees.html

Foundational Questions has announced its first awards. Garrett can buy a new surfboard.

Now he will have to explain to us what "Deferential Geometry" is.

this calls for a smilie

while we are at it. Jim Graber, who posts here, just put this on arxiv
http://arxiv.org/abs/gr-qc/0607141
A Robust Test of General Relativity in Space
it is a poster paper that was accepted by the international workshop
"From Quarks to Cosmos"

Thanks marcus. Funny you should mention buying a surfboard -- I was a little slow to reply because I was out bodysurfing The Wedge.

As you imagine, I'm quite pleased about the award.

There's more on Deferential Geometry at
http://deferentialgeometry.org

And now.. yes, it's beef for dinner. :)

Thanks, I'm moving on to Nottingham this fall, overall I had a good time in Marseille, though it's far to hot there.

Congrats to everyone else! That looks like a really nice project Garrett!

John Barrett!
Kirill Krasnov!

IIRC Krasnov collaborated with Laurent Freidel is some of the earliest papers on the Group Field Theory way to present spinfoam. Or else he worked on similar things in parallel. (also there was the BH entropy result)

Also there is an intelligent blogger at Nottingham called Satz.
He keeps the blog "Reality Conditions".

Obviously I mention these things not to you f-h, since you would already know this and much more about your new location, but in case anyone else is reading. I think it must be a very good place to do a PhD thesis.
(In my mind on par with London Imperial and possibly Cambridge.)

Will you be past the Masters and beginning the PhD? (sorry I easily forget details like this)
Do you have an idea with whom you will be working at Nottingham?

Watch out for the Sheriff there, he has a bad reputation

Yeah, it's going to be the PhD there. Probably with Barrett. I did my Diploma thesis (German equivalent of Masters) in Marseille (where I spend more time developing questions then answers).

Watch out for the Sheriff there, he has a bad reputation

I hear he has a rather high bounty out on everyone making Robin Hood jokes ;)

FH, I agree with your comment about Bee's review of the new Smolin book.
http://backreaction.blogspot.com/2006/08/lee-smolins-trouble-with-physics.html
Her review impressed me as clear lively strong and unbiased----hopefully the book is also as the review!

You said: "Great interview and review. I think I might actually pick it up."
http://backreaction.blogspot.com/2006/08/lee-smolins-trouble-with-physics.html#c115456425602733176

BTW to get directly to the interview with Smolin
http://backreaction.blogspot.com/2006/08/lees-comments.html

It is a topnotch interview and review and an
outstanding use of the blog medium.
Since this is a 'congratulations' thread, and Bee has sometimes been posting here at PF, we might as well add:

KUDOS BEE ON YR REVIEW OF THE SMOLIN BOOK!

It occurs to me that a better name for this thread would be

"Cheers to members"
or
"Cheers to members of the Subforum"Either alternative would be shorter and not so formal-sounding as

"Congratulations Ladies and Gentlemen of the Subforum"Does anyone have a different suggestion?
Would anyone especially like to keep the present thread title unchanged?

If there is agreement on changing it, we can ask selfAdjoint if he can do that and if it would be convenient. Or one of the other mentors, like ZapperZ.

If they don't want to bother (maybe it is complicated) that is all right too. I guess the formal-sounding long-winded title is OK.

Any opinions?
===============

Another possibility would be to give the thread a one-word title, like

"Kudos"

Last week I also received an email from the publisher asking me if I was interested in writing a review on Lee Smolin´s upcoming book. :bugeye: I agreeded of course and he replied that he would be sending me a copy right away, but... I have not received it yet... Probably it will take some time to reach me here in Brazil. The publisher also wrote that he could arrange for an interview with Lee Smolin online, or have him write something for my blog. That would be very nice and I look forward to it.

I could read Bee's review via Mixed States but I have no access to her blog from my office right now, so I cannot read Smolin's comments. I will have to wait until I get home tonight. Her review is interesting and I always like her style. I am eager to read his book and write my impressions.

Best wishes to all,
Christine

Ah, Ok. Now I see that Bee's post on Smolin's comments is also available at Mixed States. I can read them right now.
