Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around issues users are experiencing with LaTeX functionality on the forum, particularly regarding the display of mathematical equations. Participants share their experiences with the LaTeX preview feature, delays in rendering, and potential problems with the underlying LaTeX engine.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant reports that their LaTeX input does not match the output, specifically mentioning an equation that appears incorrectly rendered.
  • Another participant notes a delay in the LaTeX preview, suggesting that it may correct itself after some time.
  • A participant references a known issue with the preview not displaying correctly and suggests reloading the page as a potential workaround.
  • Some participants express a sense of community by acknowledging shared frustrations with LaTeX issues, including problems with Greek letters and previous posts affecting current previews.
  • There is mention of multiple existing threads discussing LaTeX problems, indicating a recurring topic within the forum.
  • One participant points out that MathJax scripts are still being used, implying that the forum may not have fully transitioned to a newer LaTeX system.
  • Another participant mentions experiencing slow page loads due to MathJax server issues, indicating potential performance concerns related to LaTeX rendering.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that there are ongoing issues with LaTeX rendering and preview functionality, but no consensus exists on the specific causes or solutions. Multiple competing views about the nature of the problems and potential fixes are present.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include unresolved technical details regarding the LaTeX engine and the impact of server performance on rendering times. Participants express varying levels of frustration and seek clarity on the situation without definitive solutions being offered.

I keep typing things and getting not the things I typed in LaTeX. Am I the only one?

Look at what I'm typing here

AD = x^{2}+(4-2x)^{2} AD = x^{2}+(4-2x)+(4-2x) AD = 2x+(-2)+(-2) AD = 2x-4

I'm getting

AD = 2x-4x

and I'm typing in LaTeX all of that (with the tex /tex function-- I believe that if you click "quote" you will see that):

AD = x^{2}+(4-2x)^{2} AD = x^{2}+(4-2x)+(4-2x) AD = 2x+(-2)+(-2) AD = 2x-4

Okay, something weird happened just now. The preview show something else. And now it corrected itself. Seriously, it's as though there's a delay with LaTeX or something.

I guess you refer to known problem - preview doesn't show what it should show. Try reloading the page or just the picture. This has been discussed zillions of times, and it will not change till Greg decides to replace LaTeX engine.

Oh, sorry, I thought I'm special. My bad. :)

& Thanks!

I'm glad you posted. I was just looking to see if others were having the same problems as me (like Greek letters being superscripted and previews show Latex I used in previous posts). Your post gave me a swift end to the search.

There's at least 20 threads about this. You could have found them e.g. by searching the feedback forum for threads with "latex" in the title.

Test: x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a} \quad \text{Quadratic Formula}

I noticed that MathJax scripts are being called in the source; seems like still using the old LaTeX system for now...

I was tinkering but ran into an issue. I'm looking to phase in MathJax in June.

Mathjax calls were a problem about 9 hours ago - now and then Opera was waiting for mathjax servers and in effect pages were loading quite slow.
