With the development of quantom theory some physicists still wondered if there might not be some "hidden variables" that might avoid the inherent randomness of quantum phenomena. Even before developing quantum theory, though, Schrödinger did not believe in classical determinism. Although the concept of a hidden variable was "proven" to be impossible, aspects of the concept were pursued notably by David Bohm in the 1950's and early 60s, and most considered it a fool's errand.

Recently, physics historian Flavio Del Santo of the University of Geneva discovered an unpublished manuscript of Schrödinger written in late 1944 on his criticism of a recent paper ( May 1943) by Edmund T. Whittaker, who gave a further argument as to why a hidden variable was not useful.
The interesting point is that Schrödinger argued that a hidden variable could nevert be discounted.
"Experimental evidence + logical deduction can never prove that either the deterministic or the indeterministic view is impossible," he wrote.
