SUMMARY

The discussion centers on optimizing product yield in chemical reactions by adjusting volume. Specifically, it clarifies that lowering volume increases pressure, which drives the reaction towards fewer moles of gas, thereby enhancing product yield. The initial answer provided in the solution manual incorrectly suggested lowering pressure instead of volume. This highlights a critical error in understanding the relationship between volume and pressure in gas reactions.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of the Ideal Gas Law
  • Knowledge of Le Chatelier's Principle
  • Familiarity with chemical reaction dynamics
  • Basic concepts of moles and gas behavior
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the Ideal Gas Law and its applications in chemical reactions
  • Study Le Chatelier's Principle in detail
  • Explore the effects of volume changes on reaction equilibrium
  • Investigate common errors in chemical solution manuals
USEFUL FOR

The answer given for (2) is " lower pressure" , isn't increase pressure, the reaction will proceed towards fewer moles of gas, therefore increase the product yield for this question.

That's a silly answer (the given answer, not yours) because the question asks how you would adjust the volume. Of course, for a given amount of gas, changing the volume will change the pressure too. For 2, reducing the volume would increase the pressure and drive the reaction to the right.

Probably a mistake in the solution manual where the word “pressure” was used in place of the word ”volume”.
