SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the challenges of using Matlab or its alternatives, specifically Octave, on an iPod. The main Matlab app requires a constant internet connection, prompting users to seek standalone options. While Octave is a viable alternative, it necessitates jailbreaking the device and involves complex compilation processes. Users currently resort to accessing Octave on a remote server via shell, which lacks graphical capabilities.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of jailbreaking iOS devices
  • Familiarity with Octave and its installation requirements
  • Knowledge of ARM architecture for compiling binaries
  • Basic command line skills for remote server access
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the latest methods for jailbreaking iOS devices
  • Learn how to compile Octave for ARM processors
  • Explore alternatives to Octave that may not require jailbreaking
  • Investigate remote access tools for running Octave with graphical support
USEFUL FOR

iOS developers, users interested in mathematical computing on mobile devices, and anyone exploring alternatives to Matlab for iPod applications.

Hello, I've been craving the ability to use Matlab on my iphone, but the main MAtlab app requires a permanent internet connection. I was thus looking for a stand alone matlab/scilab clone. I found some cryptic pointer to such a thing here: http://mobile.co.nz/?p=38" but that's just a pointer not a solution. Any ideas?

You can use Octave, but you need it jail broken first.

I looked into octave. I've jailbroken but compiling octave for the iPod is not simple. To compile on the device you need a whole bunch of libraries that aren't all stable yet. Or you can build a binary for the ARM processor on your desktop machine then transfer it. Too lazy to try this yet. At present I'm using octave on a remote server and connecting to it via the shell on a jailbroken iPod touch. No graphics though :(
