AI Thread Summary
Apple is introducing a new 8000 area code for its technical support number, which has caused some confusion for users with older devices who may need to rely on the traditional 800 number. A recent experience highlighted the limitations of Apple's phone bot, which struggled to understand inquiries and ultimately transferred the caller to a human representative. In contrast, some users prefer open-source AI solutions, like GPT4ALL, citing that these alternatives often perform better than corporate AI implementations. The discussion also touches on the impact of these experiences on perceptions of Apple as a company, with some users considering selling their Apple stock.

I needed to contact Apple recently and discovered that they are pioneering the new 8000 area code for their technical support number. I have an older iPhone and it wasn't up to the task so I had to find the old 800 number. Once I got through I was treated to an example of what I assume is Apple Intelligence: a phone bot that couldn't parse any of what I was asking about and ultimately handed me off to a human being.

Thanks for the reminder to sell some more of my Apple stock!

Well, for me, I do not use Apple AI. Instead, I use AI on my laptop called GPT4ALL, as one can install any AI model of their choosing for free, as long as it fits within RAM. Seems like big corporations bork the AI compared to running open source software.

Thread 'In the early days of electricity, they didn't have wall plugs'
Hello scientists, engineers, etc. I have not had any questions for you recently, so have not participated here. I was scanning some material and ran across these 2 ads. I had posted them at another forum, and I thought you may be interested in them as well. History is fascinating stuff! Some houses may have had plugs, but many homes just screwed the appliance into the light socket overhead. Does anyone know when electric wall plugs were in widespread use? 1906 ad DDTJRAC Even big...
