Are all centrifugal compressor big ?

SUMMARY

Centrifugal compressors are typically associated with larger power outputs, with the smallest commercially available model being the Garrett turbocharger at 50 hp. However, in specific applications, such as Fred's Rankine cycle project, smaller centrifugal compressors in the range of 1 to 2 hp are not commonly found. The discussion suggests exploring turbochargers as a viable alternative for lower power requirements.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of centrifugal compressor mechanics
  • Familiarity with turbocharger specifications
  • Knowledge of Rankine cycle principles
  • Basic concepts of power output in mechanical systems
NEXT STEPS
  • Research small-scale turbocharger options for low power applications
  • Investigate the design and efficiency of centrifugal compressors
  • Explore modifications for converting compressors into turbines
  • Learn about the performance characteristics of different compressor types
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, mechanical designers, and students involved in thermodynamics or energy conversion projects, particularly those interested in compressor and turbine applications.

Hi,

i'm comparing differents types of compressor to find out which one I'm going to convert into a turbine for my rankine cycle projet. And I'm wondering : are centrifugal compressors only for big power because the smallest i can find is 50 hp (which is the smallest turbo of garrett). I'm looking for centrifugal comp in the range of 1 or 2 hp. anybody know something about that ?

Thanks
Fred

In my line of work, all centrifugal compressors are small. But in your case you might start looking at turbochargers.
