Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the availability of books containing questions typically found in high school physics contests. Participants explore various resources and the nature of the questions included in these materials.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about books that feature high school physics contest questions.
  • Another participant suggests "Flying Circus of Physics" by Walker and "Thinking Physics" by Epstein as potential resources.
  • A question is raised regarding the nature of the questions in these books, specifically whether they involve substantial calculations or are more conceptual.
  • A participant expresses the view that the questions may be more conceptual or "handwaving" rather than calculation-heavy.
  • Resources such as "Physics Olympiad Screening Exams" from AAPT and problems from the "37th International Physics Olympiad" are mentioned as examples, though their intensity is questioned.
  • A participant shares a link to a sample problem set that aligns more closely with the level they are seeking.
  • Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on what constitutes "typical" questions for high school physics contests, and there are differing opinions on the nature of the questions in the suggested resources.

    Contextual Notes

There is uncertainty regarding the definitions of "typical" contest questions and the balance between conceptual and calculation-based problems in the suggested resources.

Is there any book with questions that would typically appear on a physics contest? I'm talking about high school physics here.

Physics news on Phys.org
Are those hand waving questions or is there a good portion of calculations?

robphy, here is a sample of the kind of questions I'm looking for:

the Olympiads might be to intensive for the level I'm looking for but I'll look into it.
