The discussion revolves around recommendations for books to read in preparation for a degree in astrophysics. Participants share their experiences and suggest resources that may be beneficial for newcomers to the field.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks recommendations for useful books for an upcoming astrophysics degree.
  • Another participant recommends a specific book, noting it was effective for their introductory course and suggests it does not require extensive math knowledge beyond calculus.
  • A third participant agrees with the recommendation and emphasizes that the book is sufficient for starting in astrophysics, while also mentioning that some basic physics knowledge is assumed.
  • One participant shares their background in A-level physics and mathematics, indicating confidence in their preparedness for the subject.
  • A later reply discusses the comprehensiveness of a recommended book, highlighting its extensive coverage of various astrophysical topics, but notes the limitation of black and white images.
  • Another participant cautions that an earlier edition of a recommended book may be outdated and suggests obtaining the latest edition to stay current with recent developments in the field.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the usefulness of certain books for beginners in astrophysics, but there is a recognition of potential limitations regarding the currency of some editions.

Contextual Notes

There are mentions of assumptions regarding prior knowledge in physics and mathematics, as well as concerns about the timeliness of information in older editions of recommended texts.

I agree with the first book which ps2138 recommended, that's all you need to get started with astrophysics basically :-) However some knowledge in basic physics is assumed in that book.

ye cheers guys.. I'm doing A-level and physics and maths so should be ok

cheers =]

The book is 1400pages, so it covers everything from celestial mechanics to stellar atmospheres to black holes to cosmology. The bad thing is that pictures are in black and white =/

Just a note though--the first edition of ostlie and caroll is probably pretty outdated on certain topics at this point. I used it several years ago and even then there were areas where it wasn't abreast of new developments (this is to be expected considering how much research is continually being done). You'll probably want to get the newest edition or you might end up stuck thinking we've only discovered a dozen or so exoplanets or that Pluto is still a planet!
