AI Thread Summary
NASA and the European Space Agency have created a sound clip representing the sun's vibrations, described as a "low, pulsing hum" akin to a Tibetan meditation bowl. This unique auditory experience is derived from data collected by NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. Listeners may find the sound either calming or unsettling, evoking a range of emotional responses. Some participants in the discussion likened the sound to eerie effects reminiscent of horror themes, while others shared personal experiences with similar audio projects. The innovative approach highlights the intersection of science and art in understanding solar phenomena.

Close your eyes and listen to this clip. It may sound like a Tibetan meditation bowl or a giant cosmic didgeridoo, but it's actually the sun! Kind of.

A group of very poetic scientists from NASA and the ESA (The European Space Agency) used data from NASA's Solar and Heliospehric Observatory to map the vibrations that form the "low, pulsing hum of our star's heartbeat." The result will either chill you out or instill a deep and vague sense of heliacal unease.

Sounds like something right out of Black Mirror. Or the sun is in pain.

@Borg , the Sun does not have a burning desire to vacuum for anyone.

Cool!

Many years ago I made a somewhat similar recording using a variable frequency audio oscillator recorded on a continuious loop of mag tape. There were also some randomly inserted some step frequency changes. A neighbor used it as background effects for a rather extensive Halloween installation. Several parents complained about it because it scared their little ones!

3I/ATLAS, also known as C/2025 N1 (ATLAS) and formerly designated as A11pl3Z, is an iinterstellar comet. It was discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) station at Río Hurtado, Chile on 1 July 2025. Note: it was mentioned (as A11pl3Z) by DaveE in a new member's introductory thread. https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/brian-cox-lead-me-here.1081670/post-7274146 https://earthsky.org/space/new-interstellar-object-candidate-heading-toward-the-sun-a11pl3z/ One...
Is a homemade radio telescope realistic? There seems to be a confluence of multiple technologies that makes the situation better than when I was a wee lad: software-defined radio (SDR), the easy availability of satellite dishes, surveillance drives, and fast CPUs. Let's take a step back - it is trivial to see the sun in radio. An old analog TV, a set of "rabbit ears" antenna, and you're good to go. Point the antenna at the sun (i.e. the ears are perpendicular to it) and there is...
