AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on a graduate school applicant seeking recommendations for universities with strong programs in High Energy Physics (theory) and Condensed Matter Theory. The individual expresses uncertainty between the two fields and requests insights from those experienced in these areas. While some participants reference US News rankings for guidance, there is skepticism about their reliability in accurately reflecting the quality of physics programs. The conversation emphasizes the importance of firsthand recommendations from individuals who have worked in these disciplines, indicating a desire for more personalized advice beyond general rankings.

Hi, thank you for reading this. I am applying to grad school this year and I'm basically torn between High Energy Physics (theory) and Condensed Matter Theory. Could you recommend me some universities that have good programs in this field? Also feel free to include school that aren't top tier but with strong groups in these fields.

Bump.

Yes, I've heard of that site but I understand that they might not necessarily know what they're talking about when it comes to physics. I was hoping that maybe someone who has worked in these fields could give me some hints...

According to US NEWS they do ask of the people that work in those fields to rate them.

TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
I’ve been looking through the curricula of several European theoretical/mathematical physics MSc programs (ETH, Oxford, Cambridge, LMU, ENS Paris, etc), and I’m struck by how little emphasis they place on advanced fundamental courses. Nearly everything seems to be research-adjacent: string theory, quantum field theory, quantum optics, cosmology, soft matter physics, black hole radiation, etc. What I don’t see are the kinds of “second-pass fundamentals” I was hoping for, things like...
