SUMMARY

Biomedical informatics encompasses the integration of knowledge and computational methods to address problems in both medical and biological fields. Key areas include the development of electronic health records using tools like Access database and the implementation of telemedicine services for remote patient monitoring. Educational opportunities, such as those offered at the University of Genoa, focus on bioinformatics integrative approaches and computational biology. This field is essential for enhancing healthcare delivery and advancing biological research.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electronic health records (EHR) systems
  • Familiarity with Access database for data management
  • Knowledge of telemedicine technologies and applications
  • Basic concepts of bioinformatics and computational biology
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore the use of semantic web technologies in bioinformatics
  • Learn about data warehousing techniques for genomic and proteomic datasets
  • Investigate mathematical modeling methods in computational biology
  • Research telemedicine best practices and regulatory considerations
USEFUL FOR

Healthcare professionals, data scientists, and researchers interested in the intersection of medicine and technology, particularly those looking to enhance patient care through informatics solutions.

Hey, all:

I'm interested in possibly branching into this field. What is it like? I know there is an overlap with bioinformatics and computer some computer science.

Anyone has any hands-on experience that they can share?

Biomedical informatics

These are possible examples from very simple activities that i do as technician or patient:

I've just made an electronic health record with Access database which is applied on monitoring of workers in my hospital - I'm going to take a course of distance learning to acquire continuing medical education credits for my carrere.

My pharmacy has just started a service of telemedicine, a remote control of ecg by a specialist that writes a diagnosis on line - Few days ago i went to emergency room where in real time physicians got my parameters from medical imaging and blood tests.

What I wrote is referred to medical informatics actually. As you know biomedical informatics gives knowledge and computational methods for problem solving not only in medical but also in biological field.

In Italy at the University of Genoa, you can study it, in particular:

- bioinformatics integrative, an envelope of an unified access to datasets, for example genomics and proteomics, via semantic web, metadata and ontology, or datawarehouse, to extract and integrate in a database;

- computational biology /system biology, an application of data-analytical and theoretical methods, mathematical modeling and computational simulation techniques to the study the evolution of complex biological systems.

For some background, I'm currently a 3rd year physics major with an astro specialization studying in Canada, and as undergraduates are want to do I'm regularly evaluating my career prospects down the road. I also plan on pursuing grad school when I've completed my degree. It might just be my anxiety acting up a little, but with a lot of the government funding drying up for public science research broadly in the US, the 'industry' everyone keeps talking about when questions like this are...
