Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the hypothetical scenario of what would happen if a person were to enter a black hole. It explores various effects and outcomes, including physical forces and radiation, and considers different types of black holes.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that one would die if entering a black hole, likely due to intense radiation or gravitational tidal forces before crossing the event horizon.
  • One participant notes that for non-supermassive black holes, tidal forces would cause spaghettification before reaching the event horizon, while supermassive black holes might allow one to cross the event horizon without immediate destruction.
  • There are mentions of additional effects, such as radiation from an accretion disk and the concept of a 'firewall', which could also impact the experience of entering a black hole.
  • A humorous remark indicates that the experience would not be pleasant, but does not elaborate on specific effects.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that entering a black hole would lead to fatal outcomes, but there are competing views regarding the specific mechanisms and experiences involved, particularly concerning the differences between types of black holes.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not resolve the complexities of tidal forces, radiation effects, or the nature of black holes, leaving several assumptions and conditions unaddressed.

What would happen if you went into a black hole?

Physics news on Phys.org
There are lots of threads about this if you search the forum.
However one way or another you would die, and you would most likely die before even crossing the black hole's event horizon due to either intense radiation or being ripped apart by gravitational tidal forces.

Imagine what it would it be like if you went into the sun . except a millions times more impressive than that.

Unless the black hole was a supermassive black hole, then tidal forces would rip you apart long before you reached the event horizon (spaghettification). The tidal forces of a supermassive black hole are low enough that you could fall into the event horizon before you were ripped apart. However, there may be other effects, which rootone touched on, like the radiation given off by an accretion disk or even a 'firewall'.
