SUMMARY

The forum discussion centers on the search for comprehensive literature on lenses, their types, and applications, particularly in the context of binoculars and telescopes. A notable recommendation is the two-volume Dover edition by Conrady titled "Optics and Optical Design," which, despite being an older resource, provides thorough insights into simple optical systems. The discussion emphasizes the need for books that cover both the theoretical aspects and practical construction of optical devices.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic optics principles
  • Familiarity with binocular and telescope construction
  • Knowledge of different lens types and their properties
  • Basic physics related to light behavior
NEXT STEPS
  • Research "Optics and Optical Design" by Conrady for foundational knowledge
  • Explore modern texts on lens design and optical engineering
  • Investigate practical guides on constructing binoculars and telescopes
  • Learn about the latest advancements in lens technology and materials
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for optics enthusiasts, students of physics, amateur astronomers, and anyone interested in the practical applications of lenses in optical devices.

Specifically I am interested in a book which talks about lenses, their types, where and how they are used. How do binoculars, telescopes work (how to construct them), what type of lenses to use...

Am I asking for too much? Would really appreciate if any of you guys could suggest me of such a book(s).

There is a really old Dover edition -- two volumes: Conrady, "Optics and Optical Design" that is old, but is pretty complete for simple systems.
