There appears to be a discrepancy in the "Newest Unanswered Threads" section, where the total count changes from 25 to 17 when viewed in detail, while a separate count of 198 unanswered threads remains constant despite reported spam being removed. The homepage widget is cached for an hour, which may contribute to the inconsistency in numbers. Over 17 years, there have been approximately 20,000 threads without replies, indicating a significant backlog. The forum has also reached nearly 944,000 threads in total, with an estimated 663,000 of those being answered. The discussion highlights potential bugs and the challenges of managing unanswered threads effectively.

This is a zoomed view of the Unanswered Threads section in the main page:

Have a look. It says that there are total 25 such threads.

Now, if I click on the "See all", this number promptly reduces to 17, as below:

If I click on the "More Unanswered Messages" link towards the right, another page opens, showing that there are 198 unanswered threads.

Now, the question is, how did the 25 change to 17? And secondly, the 198 unanswered threads never changes. I had posted a thread some days back, asking about the PF policy on old threads. The reason is, I found several spam or useless threads here. I reported many of them, and the mentors have removed them as appropriate, but the 198 unanswered threads never reduced, the number always remains 198.

Do these indicate a bug?

The homepage widget is cached for an hour.

It will show the 200 most recent unanswered threads. As you answer some, it will bring in new ones that are older. In fact over 17 years we have something like 20k threads with no reply.

Understood.

20k! That's a lot.

Anyways, thanks for the help.

Just to get the statistics, how many answered threads.

This thread is the 943761st thread ever made in physicsforums (see the URL). A couple more have been made afterwards but that number is a very good estimate.

So what's the best estimate for the creation of the millionth thread? Naive forecast (940k/17years≈55k/year) is for about this time next year.

56,000 more. 56,000 threads ago was 888000, a thread from October 2016 (an answered thread). Late 2019 if we have the same frequency of new threads as in the last 1.5 years.
