Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around building a shaker screen box for sorting sand from gravel and rocks, specifically focusing on sourcing eccentric drive gears or alternatives for creating the necessary vibration for the screen. The scope includes practical application and technical specifications related to the construction of the device.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses the need for eccentric drive gears to create vibration in a shaker screen box but has difficulty finding sources for these gears.
  • Another participant suggests that eccentric drive gears are not standard catalog items and proposes making one by modifying a standard gear with a dowel pin, recommending McMaster-Carr as a source for various components.
  • A third participant agrees with the recommendation of McMaster-Carr and provides an additional source, SDP/SI.
  • Some participants argue that an eccentric bearing, rather than an eccentric gear, is needed for the application, highlighting that eccentric bearings are commonly used in agricultural equipment.
  • One participant mentions the possibility of creating a custom eccentric by drilling a disc off-center and discusses tuning spring mountings to optimize performance.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally disagree on whether an eccentric gear or an eccentric bearing is more appropriate for the shaker screen box, with multiple competing views presented regarding the best approach to achieve the desired vibration.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes various assumptions about the design requirements and the specific components needed, which may depend on factors such as speed and power transfer. There are unresolved details regarding the optimal design and sourcing of parts.

TL;DR
where does locate eccentric drive gear
I am hoping to build a shaker screen box, to sort sand from gravel and rocks.
Want to use an eccentric drive gear to move the screen creating a vibration that would shift sand through screen mesh and over size rock wold flow off top of screen.
Have not been able to find a source of eccentric drive gear to use or even to look at in the market place.
Does anyone have sources for the eccentric drive gears.

That's because they are not catalog items, so you need to make it yourself. Buy a gear, drill a hole, and press in a dowel pin. A good source for standard size gears, dowel pins, rod ends, bearings, and similar parts is McMaster-Carr Supply Company, www.mcmaster.com. They specialize in small orders to anybody with a credit card, and don't care if you are an individual hobbyist or a big company.

Their catalog is almost 4000 pages of every gear, bearing, bolt, and gadget you can think of, plus much more that you never heard of. It's the ultimate gadgeteer's wish book.

You do not need an eccentric gear, which is a wheel with teeth.
You need an eccentric bearing. Google images 'eccentric bearing'.

Eccentric bearings are used on agricultural harvesting equipment.
The type of bearing (bush, ball, needle or roller), and the size of the bearing will depend on the speed and the power being transferred.

You can make your own eccentric by drilling a disc off-centre. You can reduce power by tuning the spring mountings of the shaker table to the excitation frequency.

The image in the first post of this thread shows what is very similar to the shaker drive on a combine harvester. With a username of @parttimefarmer it surprises me you haven't stumbled across this.
