Discussion Overview

The discussion focuses on calculating the percentage of nitrogen in urea (H2NCONH2), a homework-related problem involving chemical composition and molar mass calculations.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related, Mathematical reasoning

Main Points Raised

  • One participant states that the percentage of nitrogen in urea is 46.66% based on their calculations.
  • Another participant agrees with the same percentage and provides a formula involving molar mass and the number of nitrogen atoms in the molecule.
  • A third participant presents an alternative method using a proportion to derive the nitrogen percentage, arriving at the same conclusion.
  • A later reply suggests that the two methods presented are equivalent and emphasizes the importance of showing units for clarity and verification.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the calculated percentage of nitrogen in urea, but they present different methods to arrive at that result. No significant disagreement is noted regarding the final percentage.

Contextual Notes

Some methods involve rearranging equations, and there may be assumptions regarding the accuracy of molar masses used in calculations.

Homework Statement

Calculate the percentage of nitrogen in urea (H2NCONH2).

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

I tried and found %N = 46.66%

Physics news on Phys.org
That's the answer I get too. % N = [(molar mass N)(# N atoms in molecule)]/(molar mass of molecule)

i got it by this law: 28/N% = 60/100%
therefore: N% = (28 X 100) / (60)

Equally valid. If you rearrange your equation (or mine), you'll see that they are equivalent.

I like to show units, though, because it offers a good "check" if I need it and can keeps me from getting confused.
