Calculating SCIENTIFIC NOTATION by hand help .

Click For Summary
To calculate the expression (4*10^5)(5*10^-7) / (2*10^-3), the mantissa is computed as (4 * 5) / 2, resulting in 10. For the exponents, the calculation is 5 + (-7) - (-3), which simplifies to 1. Therefore, the final answer is 10 * 10^1, equating to 100 or 1 * 10^2. The step-by-step breakdown confirms that the correct answer is indeed 100.

4*5/2=10. Doing the exponents 5+(-7)-(-3)=1. So 10*10^1=10*10=100.

If that is indeed the problem as stated, then

Mantissa:

(4 * 5) / 2 = 20 / 2 = 10

Exponents:

5 - 7 -(-3) = 8 - 7 = 1

Answer = 10 * 10^1 = 10 * 10 = 100 = 1 * 10^2

Do you see?

thanks you very much

The book claims the answer is that all the magnitudes are the same because "the gravitational force on the penguin is the same". I'm having trouble understanding this. I thought the buoyant force was equal to the weight of the fluid displaced. Weight depends on mass which depends on density. Therefore, due to the differing densities the buoyant force will be different in each case? Is this incorrect?
