AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on calculating the weight percentage ratio between poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) in a polymer electrolyte (PE) sample preparation. The user seeks clarification on the variable "n" in the context of the oxygen to lithium ion ratio, specifically when n equals 10. The chemical formula for PEO is provided as C2n H4n+2 On+1, leading to the conclusion that for a 10:1 oxygen to lithium ratio, n should be set to 9. The user calculates the weights of each component based on this value, determining that the total weight of PEO is approximately 414.49 grams. Given that the molar mass of LiClO4 is 106.39 g/mol, the resulting weight ratio of PEO to LiClO4 is calculated to be approximately 4:1. The user seeks confirmation of this calculation.

TL;DR Summary
Weight ratio calculation of a compound
So i found this on a journal, and im wondering what is n and how can i calculate the weight percentage ratio between the PEO and LiClO4. Here is the instruction.

To prepare PEO-LiClO4-Al2O3 PE samples, predetermined amounts of LiClO4 (such that oxygen to lithium ion ratio is n:1) and Al2O3 (as a percentage of the total weight of the (PEO)nLiClO4 PEs) were dissolved and ultrasonicated in anhydrous acetonitrile.

Can someone help me if n = 10 what is the weight ratio between PEO and LiClO4.

Not clear to me if they mean molar or mass ratio.

But basically: PEO contains more or less constant percentage of oxygen (take a look at the formula). So if you take 1 mole of LiClO4 (and you have one mole of Li+) you need to find out what mass of PEO contains corresponding amount of oxygen (n-times higher, either in molar or mass proportion).

Hi Thankyou for your reply.

So PEO chemical formula is C2n H4n+2 On+1, which means, if the ratio of oxygen and lithium is 10 : 1, i have to insert n=9 in the PEO formula. which means the calculation of weight of the PEO becomes:
O9+1 = O10 = 10 mol x 16 g/mol = 160 gram
H4n+2 = 4(9) + 2 = 36+2 = 38 mol x 1.00794 g/mol = 38.30172 gram
C2n = 2x9 = 18 mol = 18 mol x 12.0107 g/mol = 216.1926 gram

Total Weight = 160 + 38.30172 + 216.1926 = 414.49432 gram

The molar mass of Liclo4 is 106.39 g/mol, so the weight ratio is

414.49432 : 106.39 = 3.89 : 1 ~ 4 : 1

am i right? looking forward to your answer!

I want to test a humidity sensor with one or more saturated salt solutions. The table salt that I have on hand contains one of two anticaking agents, calcium silicate or sodium aluminosilicate. Will the presence of either of these additives (or iodine for that matter) significantly affect the equilibrium humidity? I searched and all the how-to-do-it guides did not address this question. One research paper I found reported that at 1.5% w/w calcium silicate increased the deliquescent point by...
I was introduced to the Octet Rule recently and make me wonder, why does 8 valence electrons or a full p orbital always make an element inert? What is so special with a full p orbital? Like take Calcium for an example, its outer orbital is filled but its only the s orbital thats filled so its still reactive not so much as the Alkaline metals but still pretty reactive. Can someone explain it to me? Thanks!!
I'm trying to find a cheap DIY method to etch holes of various shapes through 0.3mm Aluminium sheet using 5-10% Sodium Hydroxide. The idea is to apply a resist to the Aluminium then selectively ablate it off using a diode laser cutter and then dissolve away the Aluminium using Sodium Hydroxide. By cheap I mean resists costing say £20 in small quantities. The Internet has suggested various resists to try including... Enamel paint (only survived seconds in the NaOH!) Acrylic paint (only...
