Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the feasibility of creating an "invisible wire" using electrons, exploring the concept of transmitting voltage through a flow of electrons in the atmosphere. Participants examine the theoretical implications and practical challenges of such a mechanism.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant proposes the idea of using an electron gun to shoot electrons into a wire carrying voltage, suggesting that the electrons could transmit voltage over a distance.
  • Another participant questions whether this concept would work in a vacuum or in the atmosphere, referencing the context of a TV picture tube.
  • A different participant clarifies that the discussion is focused on the atmosphere, not a vacuum.
  • One participant shares a historical anecdote about an inventor who created extremely thin wires, implying a connection to the concept of wireless telegraphy.
  • Another participant challenges the feasibility of the idea by stating that electrons in air are usually visible and suggesting that the mean free path of electrons in air should be considered.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the feasibility of transmitting voltage through electrons in air, with some questioning the practicality of the concept and others exploring its theoretical underpinnings. The discussion remains unresolved.

Contextual Notes

Participants highlight the importance of understanding the mean free path of electrons in air, indicating that this may affect the viability of the proposed idea. There are also references to historical examples that may not directly apply to the current discussion.

Is it possible to make an invisible wire? Heres how It would work. You would have an electron gun shooting electrons and then you would have a wire carrying x amount of volts. Then you would put the wire into the electron flow. The electrons would then act as a wire and "transmit" the x amount of volts over a sertain distance. Would it work?

In a vacuum? Like a TV picture tube? If anyone remembers those...

no in air just regular atmosphere.

According to Lem many years ago there was a brilliant inventor who learned how to draw very thin wires. One day he draw wire so thin, that it didn't exist. That's how wireless telegraphy was invented.

When electrons fly through air, it's usually quite visible.

You might want to start with figuring out the mean free path of electrons in air. After you discover that, then you may want to rethink your original question again.
