Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the potential effects of expired lubricant found in condoms on genital health. Participants explore the implications of using expired products, particularly focusing on the lubricant's safety and the integrity of the condom itself.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express concern about whether expired lubricant could cause genital issues, questioning its safety.
  • Others argue that the lubricant is typically silicon-based and does not expire in a way that would make it harmful, suggesting that the main concern is the integrity of the latex condom itself.
  • A participant mentions that health products generally degrade over time but are unlikely to become toxic or harmful.
  • There are suggestions to dispose of expired products and purchase new ones as a precautionary measure.
  • Some comments reflect on the appropriateness of seeking health advice in a forum primarily focused on physics, leading to humorous exchanges about the qualifications of participants.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the safety of expired lubricant, with multiple competing views on the implications of using such products. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the potential health risks associated with expired lubricant.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty about the degradation process of lubricants and the specific risks associated with using expired products, highlighting the need for further clarification on health implications.

I truly understand expired condom is definitely not safe for birth control or sexual disease.
I'd like to know if the expired lubricant inside the condom would cause any problem to genitals?

It's not the lube that expires. That's almost always silicon based.

It's the integrity of the latex that expires.

So this is sort of a false dichotomy.

You should never take health advice from people you don't know, especially on the internet.

That being said, the lubricant is almost certainly not going to harm you. When health products expire, mostly what happens is that they simply degrade and stop being effective for their intended purpose. They almost certainly will not degrade into something toxic or harmful.

But Big Don hit the nail on the head. It's the silicon that expires - it stops being pliable - resulting in a high risk of rupture*.*of the condom, not of you (or any part of you).

Bin what you have and buy some new ones. Problems solved

Bold of you to assume the problem has yet to occur rather than having already occurred.

And especially concerning hazards to your genitals...

The fact that you are asking physicists says something about your life choices. (What do physicists use for birth control? Their personalities.)

That's somewhat a bold assumption that all members on PF are physicists.

I was assuming he was being sensible to ask the question before potential problems…

A bit premature of me probably.
