Can Self-Taught Enthusiasts Innovate in Hydrogen Energy Production?

I am not a physics student but have always been interested in the way things work.I have studied on my own and have a good grasp of the scientific method. My interests run the gamut but right now hydrogen
, electrolysis and energy poduction are on my horizon.
