SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on the feasibility of creating a circular magnet with circular magnetization using an unmagnetized steel ring and copper wire. When current is applied to the wire, it induces a magnetic field within the ring. However, the resulting magnetic field is primarily localized within the ring, and there is minimal to no magnetic field outside of it. The concept of "magnetic keepers" is also referenced, which relates to the management of magnetic fields in such configurations.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of electromagnetism principles
  • Familiarity with magnetic field concepts
  • Knowledge of materials science, specifically ferromagnetic materials
  • Basic electrical engineering skills related to current and wire winding
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the properties of ferromagnetic materials and their magnetization processes
  • Explore the concept of magnetic keepers and their applications in magnetic field management
  • Learn about the effects of current on magnetic fields in conductive materials
  • Investigate the design and construction of electromagnets for various applications
USEFUL FOR

Physics students, electrical engineers, materials scientists, and hobbyists interested in magnetism and electromagnet design.

What happens when you try to create a ring shaped magnet with a circular magnetisation.
e.g. you take an unmagnetised steel ring, wind some copper wire around it, turn on the current for a few seconds and then remove the wire. Afterwards there should be a circular magnetic field inside the ring right? Will there be any field outside?

Try googling "magnetic keepers".
