Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the logical concepts of converse, inverse, and contrapositive, specifically in relation to the statement "All engineers have practical skills or are good at mathematics." Participants are exploring how to express this statement in the form of implications and the challenges associated with identifying hypotheses and conclusions.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks to understand how to identify the hypothesis and conclusion of the given statement to derive its converse, inverse, and contrapositive.
  • Another participant explains that the terms "converse," "inverse," and "contrapositive" pertain to implications and emphasizes the need to rephrase the statement as an "if ... then ..." format.
  • A further participant expresses uncertainty about how to convert the original statement into the "if ... then ..." structure.
  • There is an incomplete thought from a participant starting to formulate an implication with "If you're an engineer then ...".

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not appear to have reached a consensus on how to express the original statement in the required format, and there is ongoing uncertainty regarding the identification of hypotheses and conclusions.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not clarified the definitions of terms or the logical structure of the original statement, which may affect their ability to derive the converse, inverse, and contrapositive.

"All engineers have practical skills or are good at mathematics"

to write down the converse, inverse and contrapositive for the above statement, I have to find the hypothesis and the conclusion of the statement. but how? is there any other way to write converse, inverse and contrapositive without thinking of hypothesis and conclusion ??

The terms "converse", "inverse" and "contrapositive" refer to implications. That is: statements of the form "If ... then ...".

So your first task is to write it as an "if ... then ..." statement. Otherwise, the question can't be solved.
