SUMMARY

The electric field inside the dees of a cyclotron is zero due to the uniform electric potential throughout the region. Charged particles are accelerated in the gap between the dees, where the electric field is present. This design ensures that particles maintain a consistent energy level while being accelerated, as the potential difference is only significant in the gap area. Understanding this principle is crucial for comprehending the operational mechanics of cyclotrons.

PREREQUISITES
  • Cyclotron design principles
  • Electric field and potential concepts
  • Charged particle dynamics
  • Basic electromagnetism
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the mechanics of charged particle acceleration in cyclotrons
  • Explore the role of electric fields in particle physics
  • Learn about the design and function of the gap between dees
  • Investigate the implications of electric potential uniformity in particle accelerators

Why do you expect a (significant) electric field, if the electric potential is the same everywhere around the particles?

The important region is the gap between the dees. This is where the charged particles are accelerated by the electric field.
