Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around deriving Smakula's equation for calculating the density of color centers in KCl crystals. Participants seek a detailed derivation of the equation, particularly considering each F center as a damped harmonic oscillator, and express a need for references or resources that provide this derivation.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant is conducting an experiment on color centers in KCl crystals and requests a derivation of Smakula's equation, emphasizing the need for a detailed explanation rather than just the formula.
  • Another participant suggests a reference link to a resource that may contain relevant information.
  • A different participant indicates that they have already reviewed the suggested reference but found it unhelpful.
  • Another suggestion is made to consult a specific book titled "F-Centers in Alkali Halides" by Jordán J. Markham, particularly chapters 1-4.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not appear to reach a consensus on the availability of helpful resources or the derivation itself, as one participant found the suggested reference inadequate.

Contextual Notes

There is a lack of clarity on the specific steps or assumptions involved in deriving Smakula's equation, and the discussion reflects varying levels of resource availability and usefulness.

I am doing an experiment on color center in kcl crystal where I need to use smakula's eqn to calculate the density of color center.. in every textbooks only the formula has been written but I want to know the derivation of smakula's equation by considering each f center as a damped harmonic oscillator.. can anyone tell me how to derive the equation or suggest me any book (it will be very helpful if you provide me the link of the soft copy )
thank you
