Did I Calculate the Volume Using Archimedes' Method Correctly?

Click For Summary

Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around the application of Archimedes' method to calculate the volume of a sphere and its implications in determining density through displacement. The subject area includes principles of fluid mechanics and geometry.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • The original poster attempts to calculate the volume of a sphere using the formula for volume and relates it to the concept of density and displacement in a fluid. Some participants question the need for unit conversion between milliliters and cubic centimeters.

Discussion Status

The discussion includes affirmations of the original poster's calculations, with some participants providing minor suggestions for improvement, such as unit conversion. There is no explicit consensus on the correctness of the overall approach, but guidance has been offered regarding the conversion process.

Contextual Notes

Participants are operating under the constraints of homework guidelines, which may limit the depth of discussion or the types of assistance provided.

Homework Equations

Volume of Sphere = 4/3 pi r^3

d = m/v

The Attempt at a Solution

my attempt is:

r = 2
Vsphere = 32/3 pi cm^3
density of mercury = 13.53 g/ml

d*v of sphere = 259.7grams

259.7 grams of sphere * (1/density of mercury) = 259.7g *( 1 ml / 13.53 g) = 19.2 ml submerged

Did i do this correctly?

Looks good to me.

The only thing left is, you need to convert your 19.2 ml to cm3. That shouldn't take very long.
