Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around summer workshops and symposiums, particularly those relevant to astronomy, and whether they are accessible to individuals transitioning from undergraduate to graduate studies. Participants explore the nature of these workshops, their competitiveness, and the format of the sessions offered.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the availability of summer workshops for those between undergraduate and graduate studies, specifically in astronomy.
  • Another participant shares their experience that workshops are typically geared towards graduate students but suggests that advanced undergraduates may also be accepted, noting potential self-funding requirements.
  • A specific workshop at Penn State is mentioned as being useful for astronomers, particularly in the area of astrostatistics, with a link provided for more information.
  • It is noted that the Penn State workshop did not have a competitive application process, allowing anyone to sign up.
  • Questions arise regarding the format of the workshops, with participants discussing whether they consist mainly of lectures or include hands-on work with professors.
  • Clarification is provided that workshops generally focus on specialized topics rather than actual research opportunities.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that summer workshops are primarily aimed at graduate students, but there is uncertainty about the acceptance of advanced undergraduates. The competitiveness of these workshops appears to be a point of consensus, with at least one participant stating that the Penn State workshop was not competitive.

Contextual Notes

There is a lack of detailed information regarding the specific requirements for participation in various workshops, including potential costs and the extent of hands-on research opportunities.

Summer workshops/summer symposiums/etc?

Most of them are for graduate students. But do any allow people who are in between undergrad and grad school?

And how competitive are they?

I'm specifically interested about astronomy, but people can feel free to post details about any summer workshop here.

The ones I've attended were geared towards grad students, but I can't see them turning away an advanced undergrad or someone in between. But since you're in between, you might have to pay for some of it yourself. A good one is the astrostatistics workshop at Penn State; here's the website. It's very useful since astronomers tend to only know some basic statistics.

I don't remember having to do more than just sign up for this one; it wasn't competitive, anyone could go.

Wow, nice. :) Is it just lecture though? (no working with other professors?)

It was lectures and computer labs. Workshops don't tend to be actual research; they're specialized topics that your school might not offer.

Ah yes that's true. Was it mostly lecture, computer lab, or half-half?
