Does lactation take place in females if the baby is still born?

Yes. Birthing is not essential. See induction and relactation. See wet-nurse.

My professor puts lactation in a nice way, he says milk is 'supplied on demand'. What it means is if the milk produced is not used up, then the production would stop. So lactation can still take place without the infant.
