Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the solubility of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in sugarcane solutions during the sugar refining process, and whether this affects the acidity of the final sugar product.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants propose that SO2 does dissolve in sugarcane solutions during refining and that this could make the solution acidic.
  • Others argue that while the solution may be acidified at some stage of production, this does not necessarily imply that the final refined sugar product is acidic.
  • A participant questions whether refined sugar can be classified as acidic based on the processing steps.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the acidity of refined sugar, with some asserting that the presence of SO2 leads to acidity in the solution, while others contend that this does not affect the final product's acidity.

If SO2 is used during processing - yes on both accounts.

sir,can i say refined sugar is acidic?

Just because at some point of production solution is acidified doesn't mean the final product is acidic.
