Writing: Input Wanted Does this sound like a rip off of Halo?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the concept of a military organization called SPARTAN (SPecial Assault opeRations TeAms Network) set in the 23rd Century, which consists of elite units across different defense forces. These units, known as SPARTAN Rangers, are augmented super soldiers equipped with advanced Daedalus Class AMP Suits that enhance their physical capabilities. While there are similarities to the Halo franchise, particularly in the use of the term "Spartan" and the super-soldier theme, the uniqueness of the world-building and the specific elements of the story can differentiate it. The acronym SPARTAN raises questions about originality, and while some elements may echo existing sci-fi narratives, many stories feature super-soldier concepts, making it a common trope rather than a direct copy. Overall, the content suggests that unless there is a clear intention to mimic Halo, the incorporation of similar themes is acceptable in creative writing.

Does this sound too close to being a rip off of Halo.

By the 23rd Century, a special component spread out over the Naval Defense Force, Ground Defense Forces, and United Space Force is SPARTAN or SPecial Assault opeRations TeAms Network. SPARTAN is broken up into 10 Units, the GDF has 5, the USF has 3, and the NDF has 2 ranging in name from Alpha to Theta.

They are a highly elite spec ops organization trained for the most harrowing and most secretive operations and missions.

The members within each unit or the officers most important outside engineers, scientists, and others are known as the SPARTAN Rangers. They are augmented to be super soldiers, and use Daedalus Class AMP Suits (Assisted Mobility Platform), making them a good 6 feet higher.

That's largely where similarities end. I just feel within a futuristic setting, something like this would inevitably happen, some military will have some unit named Spartan or Spartans and they are bound to be better then the average human after the famous ancient warriors. Armor would also have to advanced to a greater form

A bit. But there's been many similar super-solider stories (I've written a few myself) so it's up to you to decide if your world building is overstepping the Halo copyright.

The acronym seems contrived, why not just call them Spartans in homage to the original? Or is that acronym to avoid an obvious Halo reference?

There was a 'Daedalus Class' spaceship in Star Gate, so you're good there, but Gravity Industries has built a Jet Suit with the code name, Daedalus! That's real life, though, and novels usually have a deliberate carve out for not portraying actuality. But the AMP acronym and concept is in Avatar, for what that's worth.

The heart of your question is 'how close' but unless you're obviously / intentionally ripping off Halo, adopting similar themes in a novel is hardly newsworthy.

We've just had an interesting thread about generation ships, but I don't think that that is the most reasonable way to colonize another planet. Fatal problems: - Crew may become chaotic and self destructive. - Crew may become so adapted to space as to be unwilling to return to a planet. - Making the planet habitable may take longer then the trip, so the ship needs to last far longer than just the journey. - Mid-flight malfunction may render the ship unable to decelerate at the destination...
I know this topic is extremely contraversial and debated, but I'm writing a book where an AI attempts to become as human as possible. Would it, eventually, especially in the far future, be possible for an AI to gain a conscious? To be clear, my definition of a consciousness being the ability to possess self-created morals, thoughts, and views, AKA a whole personality. And if this is possible (and let's just say it is for this question), about how long may it take for something to happen...
This is a question for people who know about astrophysics. It's been said that the habitable zones around red dwarf stars are so close to those stars that any planets in the zones would be tidally locked to the stars in question. With one side roasting and another side freezing almost forever, those planets wouldn't be hospitable to life. a) Could there be forms of life--whole ecologies--that first evolve in the planet's twilight zone and then extend their habitat by burrowing...
