Discussion Overview

The discussion explores the concept of time and whether it flows backwards, examining the implications of time's directionality and the nature of events in relation to time. Participants consider definitions of time flow and the relationship between present, past, and future.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants propose that if time flows backwards, then the future becomes the past, suggesting a model where time flows through an unchanging present.
  • Others question the definition of "time flow," arguing that the discussion may be pointless if observations do not depend on that definition.
  • A participant expresses curiosity about the phrasing "events flow from future to past, time flows from past to future," seeking clarification on this concept.
  • One participant mentions the possibility of constructing past directed time-like vector fields, while noting that massive particles follow future directed time-like curves.
  • Another participant argues that the reason the future becomes the past is due to movement through time, using the analogy of walking down a road.
  • A follow-up analogy compares walking on a treadmill to the concept of movement in relation to time, questioning whether one would say the treadmill moves in front of them.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the nature of time flow and its implications, indicating that multiple competing perspectives remain without consensus.

Contextual Notes

Definitions of time flow and the assumptions underlying the discussion are not fully resolved, leaving room for ambiguity in the arguments presented.

What if time actually flows backwards?
Since the next 10 minutes in future will eventually become the past, does that mean time actually flow backwards from future to past? This is assuming that the present doesn't move from the past to the future, and time is flowing through an unchanging present. Just a random thought.

How do you define "time flow"? Does any observation depend on that definition? If not, it is pointless to discuss it.

Since the next 10 minutes in future will eventually become the past, does that mean time actually flow backwards from future to past?
Or "events flow from future to past, time flows from past to future"?

"events flow from future to past, time flows from past to future"?
This is exactly what I was wondering! Thanks for the clarification!

One can construct past directed time-like vector fields but massive particles follow future directed time-like curves.

but the whole reason the future becomes the past is b/c we're moving in time. If you walked down the road you wouldn't say the road moved behind you...

If you walked on a tread mill, would you say the tread moved in front of you?
