SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the philosophical and physical nature of time, questioning whether it exists as a tangible entity like a chair or as a conceptual framework created by humans. Participants argue that while time may not be a physical object, it is essential for the occurrence of events, suggesting a dual nature of time as both a measurement and a construct. The conversation also highlights the relevance of time in various physics discussions, indicating its complexity and the need for further exploration in related forums.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of philosophical concepts related to existence and perception
  • Familiarity with basic physics principles regarding time and events
  • Knowledge of the distinction between physical objects and abstract concepts
  • Experience with forum discussions and community engagement in philosophical topics
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore the concept of time in physics, focusing on Einstein's theory of relativity
  • Research philosophical perspectives on time, particularly those of Kant and Heidegger
  • Investigate the implications of time as a measurement in quantum mechanics
  • Participate in forums dedicated to the philosophy of time for broader insights
USEFUL FOR

Philosophers, physicists, students of metaphysics, and anyone interested in the nature of time and its implications in both science and philosophy.

Does time exist in the same sense that my chair physically exists. Or is time something we created to give reference to events?

Physics news on Phys.org
time doesn't exist like a chair, but it exists like lengths that can measure the dimensions of the chair. It's not just human, time must be for events to even occur in the first place.

This does not meet the criteria for posting in the philosophy subforum. Feel free to do a forum search on threads regarding time as there have been many in the various physics forums.
